What is a perianal abscess?
An anal (or anorectal/perianal) abscess is a painful accumulation of pus that forms due to a bacterial infection near the anus or in the rectum. It commonly occurs when the anal glands, which normally secrete mucus, become blocked and infected with bacteria such as E. coli or Staphylococcus aureus.
Causes
The main cause is infection of the anal glands, but there are other risk factors or underlying causes, such as:
- Crohn's disease or other inflammatory bowel diseases.
- Trauma to the anal area.
- A weakened immune system.
- Diabetes.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Available treatments vary depending on the characteristics of the condition. These may range from hygienic-dietary measures to medical, instrumental, or even surgical treatment. The approach will also differ depending on whether the hemorrhoids are external or internal.
Treatment of an anal abscess is almost always surgical and urgent. It consists of draining the pus by making a small incision in the affected area to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent complications. This procedure is performed under anesthesia. Unlike other types of abscesses, applying warm compresses at home may offer temporary relief but does not replace the need for proper medical drainage.
If not treated correctly, an abscess can lead to an anal fistula, which is a permanent tunnel between the inside of the anal canal and the skin.
